Purple Globe Deploys High Definition Video On Demand(HD-VOD) Technology on Short Film commissioned by Seattle Film Festival over the internet
by Anonymous

Vancouver, British Columbia - Sept 1st, 2003. Purple Globe Communications Inc. a leader in developing technology to deliver DVD and HDTV quality video-on-demand services over any IP network, broadband or mobile network, today announced that through its content partner Virtual Highway it has succeeded in deploying a high definition short film titled "Coffee" by John Jeffcoat, over the public Internet. The film was commissioned by Cinema Seattle presenter of the 2003 Seattle International Film Festival.

To ensure a maximum theatrical viewing experience, windows media 9 digital video file of "Coffee" was encoded at high definition, widescreen, 720p, 8192 kbs bit rate, which is 8-10 times greater than current DVD-quality videos. Using Purple Globe's latest software version of their I-MX technology on a high-end, IMX 800 set-top box prototype, the film was then delivered over the Internet and was effectively viewed in high definition standard - 16:9 aspect ratio - on a common presentation projector. Unlike the more common 4:3 aspect ratio standard, currently used by regular PC monitors and regular TV, 16:9 is what is used in every HD-enabled TV set.

"I am very pleased to have successfully reached this, and several other milestones¨ said Jack Chung, President of Purple Globe Communications, Inc. "It ensures our clients that their migration from DVD-VOD movies to HD-VOD projects will be supported by consumers willing to pay to view high quality movies, plus it continues to guarantee continued time-to-market and cost effective solutions for their existing businesses."

Purple Globe's I-MX 2002 Platform technology, an end-to-end outsourcing model using their proprietary Matrixstream delivery system to over come QoS issues, is used to offer high quality videos on the public Internet. I-MX's multi-layer security also served as the primary reason why many independent producers, including some from the recent Seattle Film Festival, agreed to demo their films.
